EARTHQUAKE SUFFERERS
WIDOWS’ PENSIONS. £43,000 FOR DISTRIBUTION. At a meeting of the Central Earthquake Relief Committee held yesterday, presided over by the Prime Minister (the Right Hon. G. W. Forbes) it was decided that a sum of £43,000 should be set aside to provide pensions for earthquake widows and orphans and grants for injured persons. The basis of payment of pensions will be 225. 6d. per week to widows and 15s. per week for each child. Deductions will be made in cases where the widow’s pension is already being received, but not in respect of old age pensions. Pensionpayments will commence as from Ist January, and it is understood that the initial disbursements will be made in the course of next week. The committee also decided that all loans for the restoration of houses, not exceeding £IOO in any individual case, should be treated as free grants not subject to being called up.
