MAHOENUI

(Own Correspondent.) Sheep Fair.—At the Mahoenui annual sheep fair in the beginning of February the ladies supplied morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea, the takings to go toward the hall fund. Each pen of sheep, old and young, went briskly and prices were better than were at first anticipated, only one pen, on which there was a good reserve, not changing hands. On Friday, the 12th ult., Mr. Mackay, the agricultural inspector, and Mi-. T. Summers met at the school where Mr. N. D. Jones had taken the Mahoenui calves of the Tainui Calf Club to be judged. The results were as follows:—Dairy type: Miss K. Sole 1, Miss F. Roberts 2. Condition: William Jones 1, Athol Sole 2. The children gave three cheers for Mr. C. Croall for his gift of a Friesian bull calf to the Mahoenui branch of the Tainui Calf Club. The calf, a fine specimen, will be sold in the Spring and the proceeds will go to purchase a challenge cup for the school. On the 13th ult. the football club held the first of a series of fortnightly dances in aid of the club. On the 15th ult., the Picnic Committee met and arranged for the annual settlers' picnic to be held on the following Friday in Mr. A. C. Moir's paddock, but the weather was quite unfit for outside sports. During the forenoon, therefore, the children were entertained at a lunch in the hall, and by 1 o'clock, the showers having cleared off, races were run in Mr. J. Old's paddock. Cans of ice cream were speedly disposed of and on the whole the children had a lovely time. The picnic gave the parents a chance to meet Miss War-

beaoys. The picnic races were as follows:

At the picnic dance the weather did not behave very well and the was somewhat spoiled, but the music, supplied by the Maori String Band, is hard to beat; it makes the outing worth while even to the non-dancers. On the 16th ult., the school committee met at the school. The school finances are in good order, but they are a bit bothered at the thought of losing the dental clinic at Pio Pio.
