WAITANGURU

(Own Correspondent.) The local "school picnic was held on Friday last under glorious weather conditions, the grounds being ideal for outdoor sports, tennis, etc. The children, mostly local, enjoyed themselves to the utmost and all looked well and sun tanned from the biggest down to the tiny tots. Mere babies toddled up to breast the tape as serious as their elder brothers and sistefs. The sack race, held in relays, was most humorous. The children looked like so many kangaroom hopping out and in some cases gave a wild yell at every hop as they neared the winning post. One of the features of the day was a steeplechase across rather rough country. Both boys and girls competed and they held out in a most creditable manner. The 70yds. relay race was indeed a good test and showed the .fibre of the school boy and girl, it being a mixed race. The handicapping in the hands of Mr. Jury and Mr. Frederikson, was no easy task. Tennis took up most of the young folk, local and visitors alike. The whole outing was most interesting and the day out did everyone good. Amongst the visitors were Mr. P. O. Callaghan and visitors from Suva who were guests of Mrs. Buckley and stayed for the evening function at the hall. Luncheon was handed around in the hall for the picnickers and fruit and sweets distributed. After the races were over the chairman, Mr. Lowman, and Mr. Jury gave out the prizes to the children, who had worked steadily throughout the year and had good passes. Afternoon tea was indulged in and most of the people left for their homes to milk, etc., and to get back to the dance at night which was largely attended, there being many visitors from Mangaotaki to Pio Pio and inter-district. Music was supplied by volunteer musicians, these being Miss Bilton, Miss Verry, and Mr. Alex. Peterson, Mr. Frederikson who came up manfully with the many encores. The M.C., Mr. D. Frederikson, spoke in appreciation of the people turning out so well to make both the picnic and dance the success it was. Our popular little dance hall is far too small for these occasions, and our district visitors are so very welcome.
