WHEAT AND FLOUR
NEW SCALE OF DUTIES.: Wheat and flour duties, in accordance with the Customs legislation passed last year, became effective from Monday last. Under the new scale flour will be subject to a reduction of £2 8s a ton, and wheat to a reduction of Is. Id. a bushel.
Hitherto, when the current domestic value of flour was £l3 10s. a ton, the duty was £3 10s. a ton, rising or falling by Is. a ton for every Is. by which the current domestic value fell or rose. Now when the current domestic value is £l3 a ton, the duty is £1 12s. a ton, rising or falling as under the previous scale. The Government is insisting that the price of New Zealand flour be reduced by £2 18s. a ton.
Under the old arrangement when the current domestic value of wheat was 5s 6d a bushel, the duty was Is. 3d., rising and falling by one halfpenny a bushel for every halfpenny by which the current domestic value fell or rose. Under the amended scale, when the current domestic value is 55., the duty is Bs. a bushel, rising or falling in accordance with the scale.
