SITUATION IN N.S.W.

VISITOR'S GLOOMY PICTURE. "The present situation in New South Wales is full of menace and pregnant with dire possibilities," said Mr. D. R. Rogers, of BrightonleeSands, who arrived in Wellington from Sydney on Tuesday morning on a holiday visit to the Dominion. Mr. Rogers was the defeated Nationalist candidate for the Armcliffe seat in the New South Wales Assembly at the last election in that State. The workers, he said, were being "bamboozled" by specious promises that were impossible of fulfilment. In his policy speech on which he won the election, the Premier, Mr. Lang, had put forward promises which he must have known at the time could not be carried out, just as Mr. Scullin was returned in the Federal Parliament on the boast that he would settle the coal strike in 24 hours if returned to power—a boast by the way, which he had found impossible to fulfil, hi the same way Mr. Lang had gone into ppwer o'n what might oe aptly termed a vote of desperation. The Nationalist Party refused to gloss over the seriousness of the financial situation and were chary of making extravagant promises—hence their defeat. "Were Mr. Lang to go to the electors at the present time, said Mr. Rogers, "I am confident that on the highest estimate not more than 13 Langites would be returned to the State Assembly.
