THE COALITION FARCE.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —Are we to be defranchised, for that is what this Coalition farce amounts to. Oh ye Gods, to think of it! The Forbes-Coates combination intent on holding office for a further term —and to keep Labour out are afraid to face the electors! It has never yet been proved that to postpone the elections would in any way improve the economic outlook. We shall see what we shall see later on —a further term of muddle and maladministration. This fair land of ours is not Russia. There is no getting away from the fact that this country is cursed with a lot of second-hand politicians. Oh for a man of R. J. Seddon's ability to arise. What we want is a statesman —a leader of ability. To-day we elect representatives who compose bodies that are Parliaments only in name. Actual Government is worked by secret Juntas of party extraction whose own followers live in the dark so far as knowledge of their leader's mind is concerned. Scheming and intrigue, self and kind, form the whole interest of these Juntas. The fortunes of the people rests in the hands of, say, ten individuals, who are not, as a rule, persons of outstanding business ability. In the present passage of events Parliamentary Government has been brought to trial and condemned by its judges—the reasoning members of the public. What we want is a man who, with a sharp sword, shall cut through the Gordian knot of tangled misrule and misunderstanding. We want a man like Lincoln —a mediator and compeller. We are in a bondage of red tape. Countless ill-made, unjust, Acts of Parliament stand as warrants of this restriction. We endure tyranny of a mean and galling kind. What We want for a leader is a man of understanding, of electric driving force, of galvanic personality—one whose will shall instantly be accepted and recognised as intent—that is one with the will of. the people.—l am, etc., ■ F. C. STUART. Aria.
