SPEED KINGS

MAY MEET IN NEW ZEALAND.

CAMPBELL'S DECISION

In Sydney it is believed that there is a very distinct possibility that Captain Malcolm Campbell will go to New Zealand for his latest attack on the world's motor speed record. The Sydney speedster, "Wizard" Smith, who has planned to take the "Fred H. Stewart" special to New Zealand in March, says he hopes he has been successful in influencing Campbell to go to New Zealand. "I wrote to the captain not long ago," said Mr. Smith the other, day, "and I eulogised the New Zealand beaches. I think he might come to this part, of the world, and if he does* so I hope I will meet him when I am in New Zealand with my fine car. It would certainly add a great deal of interest to the attempt on the record if Malcolm Campbell were there. I for one would welcome the visit, and I am sure he could be certain of a great reception from the people of the Dominion."

Mr. Smith explained that at Daytona it took four miles for a highspeed car to gather speed. This left one mile for timing and only four miles for stopping. On the New Zealand beach, which he had in mind, there were seven miles and a-half to gather speed, with a mile for timing, and another seven and a-half miles for stopping. Travelling at 280 miles an hour, the least speed that Smith expects to accomplish with the car that is now nearing completion in Sydney—he has high hopes of achieving the enormous speed of 300 miles —he estimates that his car would come to a halt in five miles. This leaves an ample margin for safety.
