STOWAWAYS ON LINER
MAGISTRATE'S SYMPATHY.
LIGHT SENTENCES IMPOSED
(Received 10.35 a.m.) London, February 2.
Stowaways on the steamer Treherbert, charged at Swansea, pleaded guilty. Owners' counsel said he understood conditions in Australia were very bad, but the stowaway business was becoming such an intolerable nuisance and expense to shipowners. He had been instructed to prosecute in every case. •
The evidence given showed that on being discovered a day out from Western Australia, the captain put them to work, and they gave no trouble throughout the trip. Each told a moving story of the conditions in Western Australia and- said they had tramped hundreds of miles seeking' work. The magistrate sympathised with their plight, and in consideration of them having worked and behaved well he sentenced them to ten days' imprisonment.
