APPOINTMENT OF DEPUTYLIBRARIAN.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —I was very pleased to read the communication in your last issue over the signature “Fair Play.” Without in any way wishing to reflect on the qualifications of the lady appointed to the position, who, by the way, is entirely unknown to me other than as the wife of a man in business on his own account in this town, I am most emphatically of the opinion that an appointment of this description by a public body is entirely wrongin principle, especially in a time of unemployment and distress such as the present. I understand that there were a number of other applicants quite well qualified to fill the position who are without employment and unable to obtain the same, and surely the Library Committee had a public duty to do its bit, in however modest a way, towards the relief of unemployment by taking the individual circumstances of the applicants into consideration, which has evidently not been done in this case. The attitude of the committee is in decided contrast to that of the Auckland Education Boai’d, which recently enunciated the principle that teachers who were married women should not be given positions under the Board while their husbands were in permanent employment. After all, the appointment is only a temporary one, and surely it did not call for such outstanding qualifications in the applicant that: it was not possible to fill it by the appointment of some one more in need of the assistance.—l am, etc., UNEMPLOYED.
