THE BOROUGH QUARRY.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —I have been watching the correspondence columns in your paper to see if there was to be any light thrown by the Mayor or councillors on the question of the Borough quarry, raised by your correspondent “Let There be Light,” but apparently is it to be full steam ahead without any light. I notice in your report of the town clerk’s financial statement to the Council, that there was an estimated revenue of £IOO from the quarry royalty, but actually only £4O 17s 2d received. Could the ratepayers be informed what period the estimate covered and the actual sum received. I know just previous to the lease being granted there was an expenditure at the quarry of something like 50 per cent, of the amount received so far. If the amount received minus the 50 per cent, repair bill, is what the ratepayers are getting with the 9d per yard royalty where is the £3OO that was going to ease the burden of the ratepayers coming from under the proposed new lease when they are proposing to allow stone to be got from a neighbouring property? Is our worthy Mayor an optimist, an altruist, or what? That he still keeps flourishing the £3OO before the Council and ratepayers. It looks as if ratepayers are going to be left to hold the “baby” once more. Hoping some one will shed light on our darkness. —I am, etc., J. B. STANSFIELD.
