Mr. F. McWilliams, who died in the Waihi hospital recently, aged 68 years, had a sensational experience when 17 years of age as a member of a Government survey party in the Rotokuku Valley, near Paeroa, where he was shot by hostile Maoris. The natives opened fire on the party, and young McWilliams received gunshot wounds in the body. The natives left him for dead, and only his wonderful presence of mind in feigning death when they examined his apparently lifeless body saved his life. In his badly wounded condition he j crawled some considerable distance and was eventually rescued by memibers of his party and sent to the ; Thames Hospital, where he was a j patient for two years.
