Wanganui housekeepers are now benefiting in two directions, as there is a sugar price-cutting war on between the grocers and a meat price war between the butchers (states the Chronicle). Tons of sugar have been sold in the last week, as the sugar for the jam season is being bought in very many instances. With the housewives it has been a case of “makinghay while the sun shines.” Meat was sold at auction in the city the other day, and one buyer secured a leg of lamb and a roast for 4s 6d. The home was happy that night. It was stated that the meat would have cost 10s 6d in the usual course of events.
