TANGITU (Own Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Tangitu School committee was held in the schoolroom (Tangitu Hall), on Saturday, November 29th, at 7.30 p.m. There were present Mr. J. Jones, chairman, Messrs. L. P. Crosby, W. F. Hopkins and H. D. Blundell (committeemen), also the teacher, Mr. K. Hayr. It was decided to change the date of the school break-up dance from the 20th to the 17th December, as the schoolmaster would be able to be present on the 20th. This decision was arrived at after the chairman had made inquiries whether Mr. Broadfoot could attend on that date >an d Swift’s orchestra was available. A very good function can be looked forward to, the teacher coaching the pupils with several items for the evening, and good prizes will be available for Mr. Broadfoot to present the pupils with. _ The monthly meeting of the Tangitu District Settlers’ Association was held in the Tangitu Hall on Monday, Ist December, at 7 p.m., when there were present Mr. C. E. Middleton (chairman), Messrs. J. 1. Dixon, Mokauiti, J. A. Taylor, Mapiu, R. C. Bowick, Tangitu (committee) and the secretary, Mr. J. Jones. The outward correspondence comprised letters to Mr. Broadfoot, M.P., and Commissioner of Crown Lands, New Plymouth, re meeting the local native leaseholders to discuss matters in connection with the recent purchase by the Crown of the Tangitu Block from the natives, lo Wairere Electric Power Board, re the decision of half-yearly general mee ting of tVi6 Association, that the canvass of the area to be leticulated by the association executive be left in abeyance. To Tangitu District Branch of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union conveying decision of half-yearly general meeting re amalgamation of both bodies, that the association believes that it is in the best interests of the district that no amalgamation take place, but both bodies to come to an understanding re subjects to be discussed and attended to respectively, also that meetings of the executives of both be held on the same evening so that those who were members of both committees should not be called upon to travel twice for said meetings. This in the opinion of the association should do away with all the overlapping and duplication of correspondence, etc., complained of. A reply was received from Mr. Broadfoot, M.P., m which he stated his readiness to attend a meeting of native leaseholders in company with the Commissioner of Crown Lands. Keen and enthusiastic discussion took place in reference to various matters of local interest. The secretary gave a statement of accounts as at date, which was adopted as being very satisfactory by the meeting. At the termination of the above meeting the monthly meeting of the Tangitu branch of the N.Z. Farmers Union was held, when the following were present: —Mr. C. E- Middleton (chairman), Messrs. D. Mcßeth, W. F. Hopkins, J. A. Taylor and J. T. Dixon (committeemen), and the secretary, J. Jones. Outward correspondence comprised letters to the Provincial secretary re speakers being available to address a geneia meeting of the branch, _ and other matters re internal affairs of the branch. To Mr. Broadfoot, M.P., ie vacant sections 15-16, Block, Mapara Survey District. Inward comprising letters from Provincial secretary in replv to inquiries submitted and various' other matters. From Mr. Broadfoot, M.P., with enclosure from Minister of Lands, re above mentioned vacant sections. Members expressed themselves as very dissatisfied with the attitude adopted by the Minister in reference to these sections, which are a menace from the ragwort so prevalent all ovei them. This the Minister admits, yet delay's in making the terms for purchase such as to attract buyers. The secretary was instructed to supply all information to the settlers suirounding these sections and are asked to give details to the Minister re same and suggestions. From Dominion executive circular letters re de-rating, by Mr. J. B. Jordan, chairman of Land Committee. Members were appreciative of the facts and figures contained in this circular and the secretary was instructed to convey their appreciation to the right quarters. Resolutions from the Matamata branch re the chaotic state of affairs in regard to the sale of butter on the local market, suggesting a conference of all district suppliers of factories to discuss situation and attempt to find a solution. This was endorsed. A further resolution from the same branch re unemployment taxation was keenly discussed, but members were of opinion that this should be given a trial, and if eventually it was found that it was not a success, then the whole forces of the Union should be marshalled to bring about its repeal. It was felt that no good purpose could be served by embarrassing the newly formed Unemployment Board in its activities. A resolution from the Putaruru branch, which read somewhat as follows: —“That dairy produce sold in this Dominion for our own consumption should not be sold under cost price plus ten per cent., was laid on the table A circular letter from the Dominion executive re necessary precautions with sheep at shearing, was very instructive. From same source re investigations at Massey College regarding openness in cheese. The types of openness in cheese were given and the causes for same. Very interesting details were given in relation to these phases, of cheese production. From same source re construction, maintenance and classification of roads. Very informative details were given re mileages and standards of roads, rural and urban, mileages in relation to population, and various other phases of this most important matter in relation to the roads of the Dominion. From the same source re the development of motor transport in New Zealand, more especially since the passing of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1924. Facts and figures in connection with all kinds of motor vehicles were given, which were of great value to those Interested, also a circular letter of great importance on the basis of

motor taxation, and the report of the Intermediate Credit Board for the year ended 30th June, 1930. Resolutions were passed in connection with all those matters requiring some decision and the secretary was instructed to attend to same. The secretary was instructed to forward the following- resolution to the Provincial secretary:—“That in the opinion of this branch immediate representations should be made to the Acting Prime Minister re the advisability of reinstating the Moratorium until such times as costs of production had been brought down to the level of returns for primary produce.” Statement of accounts was given by the secretary and adopted as satisfactory bv the meeting, and after all accounts had been passed for payment, the meeting was closed. The weather during the latter part of the week has been of a real summer kind, and the farmers have utilised every hour of fine weather available during the daylight to do their shearing.
