UNITED PARTY

THE GENERAL ELECTION. SELECTION OF CANDIDATES. Although the Reform Party and the Labour Party have already officially announced a number of candidates for the next General Election, the United Party has so far made no announcement, although in one or two cases prospective candidates have announced themselves. An official of the party stated to a Post representative that it was quite unlikely that any announcement would be made regarding the party’s intentions until after the Dominion conference in March next. It was stated that men of high standing in the community were offering their services to the party, which was facing an election with confidence.

Regarding the general organisation of the party, it was explained at a recent meeting in Christchurch that work was proceeding unostentatiously but effectively, and from various parts of New Zealand gratifying reports had been received, describing enthusiastic interest in the work that was going on. Details in connection with both the Dominion and local organisations were discussed, and decisions had been reached, said the organiser, Mr. J. A. Shand, that would be manifest later on.

The organisation of the party, as previously laid down, has been considerably amended, and the changes were explained to the meeting. It was stated that the new arrangements would throw more responsibility upon branch executives and on individual electorates. General satisfaction was expressed at the change in methods.
