DISTRICT ROADS

IMPROVEMENTS WANTED. REPLIES FROM MINISTER. Several replies have been received by the member for Waitomo, Mr. W. J. Broadfoot, from the Minister of Public Works regarding roads in the county. Referring to the Taumarunui-Te Kuiti road (Te Kuiti-Kopaki section) regarding a request from the county engineer that certain improvements should be carried out, the Minister wrote:— “I have to advise that this matter has now been enquired into and I find that the section in need of attention is three miles in length, and extends from the end of the present metal to the Mokau bridge. The work required consists of the widening, re-locating and grading of this length, the estimated cost being approximately £2OOO. After carefully considering the matter, I am of opinion that the Government would be justified in financing the total cost. As the work in question is suitable as a relief job, I have pleasure in informing you that it has been decided to place on this road sveral of the relief workers who will shortly be finishing up on other roads in the district.” The Minister also wrote to the effect that re Mr. Broadfoot’s letter urging that a portion of the Tutukakariki Road be constructed to give access to a settler at Waimiha, that an authority is now being issued to the Department’s District Engineer at Taumarunui to permit of an engineering survey being carried out over the road in question. When the construction work is completed on the Mapara Road by relief workers, the question of commencing the formation of the Tutukakariki Road will then receive consideration.
