A SPLENDID TASK.

TRIBUTE TO A NEW ZEALAND INSTITUTION. "So appreciative of the profits earned for them from the sale of war carry-over wool by Bawra were New Zealand pasitoralists that they set apart £210,000 of the surplus of £1,600,000 received by them," states the Melbourne lArgus of November 29. '"That money was devoted to assisting children whose fathers lost their lives when serving in the British mercantile marine during the war. The eighth annual meeting of the trustees of the fund was held in New Zealand recently. The report is an illuminating document. Since 1921 cash grants to beneficiaries in New Zealand and_ London have aggregated £55,925, loans of £3333 have been made, and £35,496 has been spent upon the immigration training and settlement in New Zealand of bay and girl dependents. All participants must primarily be sons or daughters of British seamen who lost their lives, or became incapacitated "as the result of injuries received at sea during the war. To date 429 boys and 94 girls have been received in New Zealand. The greatest care, is exercised in the selection of the young people. When in the Dominion the lads are watched over and trained to qualify themselves as settlers on the land. The success of this work has been remarkable. Hence, ift setting apart funds from the wool surplus, not only was a patriotic purpose fulfilled, but satisfactory employment was found for 362 boys and 73 girls. There is every reason to believe that most of them will become good settlers . Their number also will be added to as the capital outlay on land, building and equipment for educative purposes, has been incurred, and there is £50,000 of cash asserts with which to carry on. No such fund was created in Australia."
