KINS COUNTRY POSSIBILITIES.

OPINION OF AN EXPERT.

THE ECONOMIC” POSITION OF THE FARMER. The representative of a large financial concern, which has £2,000,000 invested in various properties in the Dominion, mostly in farming! lands, was in Te Kuiti yesterday, and in a short interview with a representative of .the Chronicle made some very interesting comments on ’the position of the King Country from a farming point) of view. Asked what had been his impressions of this district during his stay, our informant stated that while the district was not looked upon with any great favour in financial circles in Wellington, there was nothing to warrant such a view. There was absolutely nothing wrong with lands in the King Country, and climate and soil were in its favour. Mistakes had been made in treating these lands in not using the right, grasses, and in the treatment of the hill counti'y. The lessons that had been learned, however, in this connection would do much, to obviate these mistakes being repented in the future. “What is required in this district is cheap money, more population, and education in farming methods,” stated the visitor. “I have never been worried about the resources of the King Country; they are to be found, but the question is how are we going to make the most of these ? It is a problem that- I cannot find a remedy for in this district or any other part of the Dominion, for other districts have the same troubles as you have here.” Our l informant went) on to state that the. farmers were up against economic conditions which the large financial institutions refused to consider. It was not the managers of these concerns that were to blame, for these institutions were controlled from London. He considered that the shipping charges were far too heavy, and the farmer 1 bad to bear the heaviest burden of this. We hear a lot about the heavy taxation in Britain but the people of this country were paying their share in the heavy cost- of commodities and service of all kinds.
