TAXI CHARGES.

REDUCTION ASKED FOR

At Monday night's meeting of the Borough* Council ' the Mayor reported that, in company with the town clerk, he had that morning interviewed the Te Kuiti taxi drivers and pointed out that their charges were considered rather high. The drivers had thereupon presented a schedule of prices which he still considered to be somewhat excessive. This annoutneemeut opened up a lively discussion, in which it was very evident that councillors, generally, agreed, with the Mayor. It was stated, that one of the taxi drivers had threatened that all cars would be withdrawn if their charges were not agreed to. The Mayor retorted that if this was done their licenses would be quickly withdrawn, and other taxis would not be long in taking their places. A councillor said he knew of one instance in which an invalid was charged 12s (id for conveyance from Burnside Hospital to Nurse Cobb's. A Councillor: Their charges arc simply appalling.. Another councillor said the trouble was that there were too many taxi drivers.

The Finance and Legal Committee were eventually deputed to draw up a scale of charges for submission to the taxi men.
