SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

MOTION OF PROTEST.

At a meeting of the School Committee on Wednesday evening there were present Mr A. F. Howarth (chairman), Mrs Edgar, and Messrs Davidson, Stansfield, Hadfield and Rev. Dennis.

It was decided that the distribution of cocoa to the children be discontinued as from Monday next, 10th inst., and that a very hearty vote of thanks be recorded to the large-hearted little band of women who were responsible for the distribution of the drinks to the children during the past year. Messrs Howarth, Davidson, and Mrs Edgar, were appointed a deputation to the Chamber of Commerce, and Mr Rolleston, M.P., in reference to the Technical High School at Te Kuiti.

After some discussion, the following motion, proposed by Mr Howarth and seconded by Mr Stansfield, was unanimously carried:—"That this committee protest against the suggestion of the Board of Education (technical branch) to the effect that the people of Te Kuiti should be asked to provide the sum of £IOOO as a contribution towards the cost of the erection of a Technical High School in Te Kuiti, and that this committee considers that the present accommodation at the District High School is inadequate, and that there is a sufficient number of pupils available to warrant the erection of a Technical High School in Te Kuiti, and that it is the duty of the Department of Education to provide a Technical High School to meet the immediate requirements of the district. In this connection the committee draws the attention of the Board of Education to the fact that during the past 12 months the residents of Te Kuiti and the surrounding districts have contributed voluntarily the sum of £7OO towards the cost of the purchase of the site for the Technical High School and the sum of £856 towards the funds of the Te Kuiti District High School, and thus the committee considers that it is unreasonable to suggest that the public of. Te Kuiti should be asked to make any further contributions in the direction of relieving the Department of Education of its responsibilities towards the children of this district." A sub-committee was appointed to arrange for a concert at an early date to further the school fund's. .
