LIQUOR IN THE KING COUNTRY
Before Mr F. W. Platts, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court, George Leapai, a native of Hawaii, was charged with keeping liquor for sale in the proclaimed area of the King Country. The hearing occupied several hours, and accused was fined £25 with costs £5.
Arthur Wilding and William Coulter, farmers, of Ohaupo, were charged with the theft of a large quantity of tools and milking machinery plant from settlers in the locality. A remand was asked for and granted, when numerous charges, involving the theft of farm implements amounting to several hundred pounds, will be preferred against the accused.
Several natives were fined for taking liquor into the King Country. James Francis McMullen was fined £lO for supplying liquor to Maoris. Burglars entered Spear’s tobacconist shop last night, forcing an entry through a side window. The intruder was evidently disturbed early in the proceedings, for, apart from slight confusion in the shop, nothing was missed.
