POWER FOR WAITOMO.

PETITION TO GOVERNMENT. The provisional committee of the Waitomo Power Board has now reached that stage in its activities when a petition for presentation to the Government has been prepared, and will shortly be circulated for signatures.

The petition prays that: “We, the undersigned petitioners, are not less than one-fourth of the ratepayers in each proposed constituent district which is desired shall be constituted an electric power district under the Electric Power Boards Act, 1918.” The proposed constituent districts situated within the electric power districts are as follows:

Parts of the said Waitomo and Otorohanga Counties (the latter including the Otorohanga Town District) and the Borough of Te Kuiti.

Parts of the said Waitomo and Otorohanga Counties to form the outer areas.

That the members of the board of the said Electric Power District shall be elected, by the electors of the several constituent districts (including combined districts) of the said Electric Power District.

That the population, number of ratepayers, and value improved and unimproved of all rateable property within such constituent districts are as follows: —

The area over which the board will operate, and covered by the above figures, is as follows.:—

That the number of members proposed to constitute the Electric Power Board for the district shall be seven, and the number of members proposed to be elected by each constituent district shall be as follows:—

Otorohanga County ' 2 Waitomo County 2 Te Kuiti Borough 2 Otorohanga Town District .. 1 That it is respectfully suggested that the name of the district shall be the Waitomo Electric Power District.

The Public Works Department, having approved of the petition in its entirety, the next step is to obtain the required signatures. When this is done the petition will be forwarded to the Government for approval. The district will then be gazetted a power district, and nominations will' be called for seats on the board, the election of which will at last place the whole scheme on a definite footing.
