PIO PIO TENNIS CLUB.

The annual general meeting of the above club was held in the Town Hall, Pio Pio, last Wednesday night, there being an average attendance of members. In the unavoidable absence of the president (Mr Rochfort), Mr S. C. Smith presided. The report disclosed a very satisfactory result for the past year, the first of the club's existence. At the opening of the season there were three financial lady members and five financial gentlemen members, and the season closed with the membership increased to thirty-six ladies and thirty-four gentlemen. Financially, the balancesheet showed a pleasing credit balance, which will enable various improvements to be made to the courts for the coming season. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr S. C. Smith; hon. secretary, Mr V. N. Hawke; hon. treasurer, Mr M. de R. Petrie; vicepresidents, Messrs F. Rochfort, C. K. Wilson, and R. T. Bailey; hon. auditor, Mr S. Thorburn; committee, Misses Wilson, Jackson, Towler and Gauntlett, Messrs Bloomfield, Tod (2), and Cooney.

The opening day was November 12th, when there was a good attendance of players and visitors. A number of Pio Pio players attended the opening of the Waitanguru Club's court, and later the. Waitanguru Club returned the visit. A tournament was held during Easter, but owing to the large number of entries and later to the inclemency of the weather, it was impossible to finish. The finals will, however, be played early in the coming season. Two enjoyable dances were held during the year, both assisting the club funds considerably. The committee decided to commence a sinking fund for the mortgage held on the club grounds and have set aside a sum of money for that purpose. The present court has been topdressed, leaving only the finishing touches to be applied to the second court in order to have two very fine courts. This work will be proceeded with as early as possible in the coming season, as the present playing accommodation is entirely inadequate for the large membership, which, judging by the number of intending members who have already applied to the committee for admission, will be greatly increased in the coming season.

It was unanimously decided by the meeting to allow school children the free use of the courts, and it was left to the incoming committee to arrange with the local headmaster the times at which the courts could be used by the children. Members present signified their intention to coach the children.

In conclusion, the report stated: — The outgoing committee wishes to thank all those who so generously gave their services in the making of the courts, those who made donations to the funds, and all members who co-operated to make the season such a success, and looks forward to the continued progress of the club. Although the club has large responsibilities, there is no doubt that with the popularity of the courts and the loyal support of all members the club should enjoy a very prosperous future.
