THE AMBULANCE.

QUESTION OF CONTROL. At last night's meeting of the Borough Council, the Waitomo County Council forwarded the result of its deliberations with the borough representatives, on the question of the control of the new motor ambulance. The letter suggested that each local body should share equally in the cost of garaging, and that any deficiency in the cost of running should be borne by the local bodies in proportion to the mileage done in the county and borough respectively. The letter also stated that a sufficient fee for the use of the ambulance should be charged and payment of same strictly enforced to cover all running and maintenance charges, with actual control in the hands of the borough. Three tenders had been received for garaging and cost of driver, and that of Messrs Henderson and Martin was recommended. Cr Blackman informed the council that the Waikato Hospital Board had intimated to him that the ambulance was ready at any time. Cr Somerville wanted to know what the running charges would amount to.

The Mayor said the proposals in the letter were purely tentative, and suggested that the borough sub-com-mittee confer with the county council sub-committee to draw up rules and regulations and generally place the matter on a business footing. Cr Somerville accordingly moved in this direction, adding the name of Mr J. Kiernan (town clerk) to the borough sub-committee. A question from Cr Lorigan drew an assurance from the Mayor that every endeavour would be made to get the ambulance here as quickly as possible.
