MAPIU NOTES.

SCHOOLS’ PICNIC AND SPORTS.

The Mapiu, Tangitu and Kaitangaweka combined schools’ picnic and sports were held on the Mapiu Domain on Saturday, March 4, when, luckily, the weather was most favourable—in fact, a perfect day. The children started at about 11 o’clock with lunch, to which ample justice was done. After lunch, races were held, and some very keen and interesting contests were witnessed. The following were in charge of the sports: Organiser, Mr J. W. Shearer; handicapper, Mr R. C. Bowick; judges, Messrs R. Addison, J. W. Brake, J. C. Bowick, D. Mcßeth. Mr B. M. Gernhoefer was in charge of the prizes. Results of Sports.

Boys’ Three-legged Race,—Jack Tulloch and Stan Taylor 1, Bill Tulloch and Gordon Carrington 2, Jim Tulloch and George Fitzgerald 3. 100 Yards’ Championship.—Mick Brosnan (Tangitu School). The mile (open) was won by W. Brown (nine years), amid much cheering. He ran a wonderful race for a boy so young.

A dance in aid of the Picnic Funds was held in Mapiu School in the evening. The school was packed almost tc. the doors. Dancing continued until about 5 a.m. the followingmorning. Messrs J. W. Shearer and F. W. Hose were M.’sC., and music was supplied by Messrs A. Andrew, Claude Carrington, Pat Goulding, J. Green, A. Gill, and G. Rinata, and songs, which were much appreciated, were sung by G. Rinata, Jack Goulding, J. Rea, F. Hose. A very nice supper was provided by the ladies.
