BOROUGH COUNCIL.

THE LIBRARIAN RESIGNS. His Worship the Mayor (Mr H. Hine) presided at the meeting of the Borough Council last evening, when the following /were present: Crs Blackman, Rothery, Walsh, Lorigan, Boddie, Hitchcock, Pine, Somerville, Tapp. Raising the Bank Rate. A letter was received from the manager of the Bank of New Zealand, stating that, in connection with the District Fund account, the minimum rate of interest from the Ist inst. is to be 7 per cent.—The letter was received. The travelling advisory superintendent of fire brigades (Mr T. J. Watts) notified the council that whilst he could not speak for the Underwriters’ Association, he would advise the council that if it adopted his recommendations, and wrote to the association to this effect, any reduction that it might obtain would be contingent upon his report being adopted. The Mayor said that the council should ask what reduction the association intended to make in the rate of insurance, as the council proposed to carry out the recommendations. He moved to this effect. Seconded by Cr Somerville and carried.

The Te Kuiti Lime Co., Ltd., notified the council, in reply to a letter that their engineer had notified them that he expects to have the machines connected up and running within fourteen days from date.— Referred to the Electric Light Committee. The Somerville, McAdam Co., Ltd., asked the council to inspect the new road through the Somerville, McAdam Co.’s subdivision, and asked it to accept dedication in writing.—Referred to the Works Committee. Mr A. J. Sutherland wrote stating that if the council would grant him grazing rights over the Esplanade, from the Bowling Green to the swing bridge, he would undertake to keep it clear of gorse and noxious weeds. —The offer was accepted for one year. Resignation of Librarian. A letter was received from Mrs Fitzgerald, resigning her position as librarian, treasurer and secretary of the Te Kuiti Public Library, and asking that it take effect from the end of the present month. Several councillors expressed regret at the resignation, as Mrs Fitzgerald had been very satisfactory in the discharge of her duties, and Cr Somerville suggested that the resignation be referred to the Library Committee, in the hope that Mrs Fitzgerald might be induced to reconsider her decision. Cr Boddie said that Mrs Fitzgerald was resigning because of illhealth, and therefore it would be useless to ask her to reconsider her expressed intentions, and he would move that her resignation be accepted. Cr Somerville seconded the motion, which was carried. It was resolved to advertise for another librarian immediately.
