PIO PIO EVENTS.

A MEMORIAL SERVICE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A memorial service to the late Dr William McLeod was held in the Town Hall on Sunday. The esteem and affection in which our doctor was held was manifested by the large number of friends who attended. There were over 200 present, representative of all parts of the district, and of every denomination. The hall was appropriately draped for the occasion by the members of the Ladies’ Guild, and the service was conducted by the Rev. H. R. Fell, assisted by Mr Byrt. Mr Fell spoke from Hebrews Xl 3: “He being dead yet speaketh.” The speaker expressively voiced the feelings of all in our loss, and the lessons to be learnt from his life of service. Mr Byrt spoke from Colossians IV—l4: “The Beloved Physisian,” emphasising that the departed was not only the physician, but a true friend who, by his kindly acts of friendship, made him indeed the beloved physician. The service was marked by deep feelings of sorrow and sense of our great loss. Though our friend has gone from us, there is lefL to us a memory that will never fade. The junior football match between Pio Pio A and Pio Pio B team was played on Saturday, and resulted in a win for the B’s, the score being 14 to nil. Mr Burnell was referee. We congratulate the winners, as they have won the admiration of all by their sportsmanship and clean play. Mr Henderson, who has been postmaster for close on two years, has received word of a transfer, and his friends will, at the tennis social on the 22nd inst., mark their appreciation in a practical manner. A Correction. Mr Editor, —In Saturday’s issue there is a statement to the effect that a resident of Pio Pio is to appear before the Court on a charge 'of sly grog-selling. This is an error —you must go further afield. Pio Pio has been in the limelight quite enough in times past, and we have been on our good behaviour—a very marked improvement being noticeable in the last few months.
