RETURNED SOLDIER DROWNED.
GALLANT ATTEMPTS AT RESCUE. WELLINGTON, Monday. A returned soldier named Dudley McKenzie, 31.31., was drowned at Rona Hay on Saturday afternoon. 3ic-Ken-zie, wkojras not a swimmer, got into difficulties in a strong under-current. A companion named Harrison managed to reach 3lc-Kenzie, but being only a moderate swimmer, wa§ unable to hold him. Ernest Hunt also made a strenuous attempt at rescue, but became exhausted. Harrison was floating away with the tide, but was fortunately rescued by a passing rowing boat. The lxidy was recovered on Saturday night two miles from the scene of the accident.
