BRITISH SUPPORT THE PROPOSAL.
WANTON WASTE DEPRECATED. NEW YORK, Dec. 20. Press despatches from Paris say that the American delegates, with British support, suggest the sinking of the surrendered German fleet as a solution for its disposal. Mr Daniels, Secretary to the Navy, said he had not heard the suggestion offlfcially. At the State Department it was learned so far as is known that no such proposal is included in the American peace programme.
The press, commenting on the proposal, says that it would be better to sell the material in the German ships and employ the money to rebuild devastated France and Belgium. They point out that they might as well sink the George Washington, Lcviathian and other German merchant ships taken over by the United States.
