ENGINEER'S REPORT. Since your last maeting very little in the way of new construction work bas been done, owing to the epidemic and so much wet weather. The ordinary maintenance and repair work has been carried out as effectively as labour conditions would allow. The 3apply of efficient labour necessary to meet oar requirements is still a very serious problem, and I am afraid thera will be considerable difficulty in carrying oat our works .proposals for the coming saason.'lo tha extent anticipated. During the last fortnight the roads have x dr»ed up sufficiently to start metalling operations and a commencement has been made with the following - works:— Puketawai Road Metalling.—The contract let to Tate Bros, for blinding with shingle the rhyolite recently laid down was commenced and will be satisfactorily completed in a few days, 'Mangamuhu Flat. —The contract let last season for the metalling of the Otorohanga-Hangatiki road is now about finished. Tapairu Road. —A re-commence-ment has been made with the metalling on this road, which was started last summer, and a few chains have been finished. Kopaki Road.—The metalling of this road has been continued and there now remains about 70 chains to complete. Pukerimu Road.—The metal contract let on this road is now nearing completion and is boing done in a satisfactory manner. North Mapara Road. —The metalling of a portiwn of this road, a distance of 1 mile 45 chains, which Was commenced last winter by day labour, has been completed, tha balance of the wcrk, a further mile and a quarter, it is proposed to carry out by contract. Kurakura Road. —The metalling of the latter portion of this read, a distance of 3£ miles, has commenced and about 15 chains are already completed Pio Pio-Aria Road.—A re-com-mencement has been made with metalling the uncompleted gaps on this road, a distance of 2i miles, and a few chains are already done. Mangaotaki Road. A re-com-mencement has also been made with the metalling contract on this road.

Mokau-Ohara Road. —A squall section of this road neer Pio Pio township, which during the winter ironths gets in a very bad state, is now being metalled. Tne metalling contracts which have not yet re-commenced are on the Kumara. Kiekie, Tangitu and Mangapobue roads, but 1 hops to get these contracts started immediately after the holidays. In addition to the metalling works already referred to contracts have yet to be let on the following roads as soon as contracts can be prepared and satisfactory arrangements made: —Mapara South, Ngapaenga, -Te Euiti-Pio Pio, Mangaotaki, and Otoroha'nga-Hanga-tiki roads.
