BOWLING.
The -South Auckland tournament, which concluded at Hamilton on Saturday was productive of some very fine contests. The semi-finals in the afternoon saw four good teams left in, in eluding Whitiora Nos. 1 and 4 teams, the other two being Te Kuiti, No. 1 Bnd Te Aroha No. 1. Owing to the form shown throughout the tournament, Te Kuiti waß popularly held to have a first-rate winning chance. Unfortunately the rain came on rendering the green very heavy and making matters rather unpleasant for the players. Whether it was that they were unable to pick up their game on the heavy going, or whether the team simply had struck an off day, is impossible to determine. The Te Kuiti men were soundly beaten by 33 to 9 after a game in which all the members played much below their true form. Their conquerors must be given credit for putting up a great game under the conditions, the skip, Pilkington, in particular playing a very sound game. On the adjoining rink Whitiora No. 1 defeated Te Aroha No. 1 after a verv close contest, the Whitiora Club thus claiming the honour of supplying both the winners and runners up.
The Te Kuiti No. 2 team at Hamilton after suffering defeat in the games thev contested on the first day of the tournament did much better later on and won two games on the second day. On the concluding day they were defeated by Whitiora No 4. by the narrow margin of one point. A feature of the play was the leading of C. Stevens, who performed brilliantly. The Te Kuiti No. 3 team, which was locally supposed to be the weakest combination from this centre, opened its account with a couple of brilliant performances by defeating strong teams. Rowell, as lead, set the standard by hugging kitty consistently, and he was well supported by his colleagues. Considering that the team contained three . first year players, their performance was excellent, and the experience should be valuable subsequently. Albrechtsen is deserving of special mention for his skipping, which was excellent.
