OHURA COUNTY COUNCIL

• The monthly meeting was held on the 23rd inst. Present—Crs Stevenson (chairman), Risk, O'Brien, Williams, McKinnon, Sandison and Stuart. A special meeting was held to appoint a chairman for the ensuing year, Cr Stevenson being elected. He expressed his appreciation of the confidence the Councillors had in appointing him chairman again. He trusted that the last year <jf their term would be satisfactory to the Council and the ratepayers. D. Mcßae wrote that bridge over creek on his section be bridged out of vote for Mangakara. The Rev, H. Bull wrote objecting to pay rates on the section held by the church, as it is exempt. —Decided that as section is not in use the rates be enforced.

Road Through Matiere Village. — The Minister wrote that enquiries would be made and further communication will be forwarded.

Mr M. J. Dunn wrote asking that the Council urge on the Government to widen the deviation on Rima road.— Resolved that the Council has no power to interfere, having already requested that widening be proceeded with. Waitewhena Telephone. —Resolved that Council guarantee up to £24 the cost of telephone from Mangaroa to Waitewhena.

Mr Williams, assistant resident engineer, wrote requesting that all Government material be returned to office at Mangaroa. County Boundaries.' —Mr i'. A. Riddle wrote on behalf of ratepayers to have northern portions of Obura County transferred to Waitomo County, and suggested a boundary. Whare on Mangapapa Road.-- Permission was granted to use whare while not used by surveyors.

K. Dench wrote that he is opposed to having his "thirds" spent on MaticreMokau roads, having signed petition to help the others. Workmen's Compensation. The Public Works Department wrote that they did not for many reasons give legal advice to local bodies. Finger Tests.--The Public Works will erect finger post at the junction of the most important roads under the control of the Department.

Ongarue River Bridge.--Commis-isoner wrote that the Land Board has agreed to allot £-100 of the Kurarau "thirds" for the erection of bridge, also £134 l?s lid, "thirds" accrued to Waitewhena roads. Resolved that Department be notified that the £4OO is now available and that the work be proceeded with as speedily as possible. Mr Geange waited on the Council re payment of contract. They had applied for a progress payment and had not been received until the contract was finished. They had written to Mr Murray and received information that he (Mr Murray) had written the county engineer that the contract was not in accordance with specifications and no information had been given to him as to completion of contract. — Resolved that the Council would make every effort to ascertain whether any object/on had been made to payment as the contract was passed hy the assistant resident engineer, and payment should have been made.

Mr Willie waited on the Council on the subject of dog collars as the brass number on last year's collars came off after a few weeks use. He asked that the number be stamped on leather and suggested that the Council purchase a stamping machine. Resolved that consideration be given to the proposal. Resolved that the County employ a competent foreman to assist the engineer.

The following amounts are proposed to be transferred to the Council for expenditurePirere £250, Mangapapa £483, Otanui stream bridge £2OO, Otuiti £l5O, Mangapara £56, Poro-o-tarao to Taumarunui £73, Tokirima - Kaikara, Maraekowhai and Tongaporutu £ for £ on account of £ISOO, £250 now available. Waitangata £IOO, Waitewhena £BO, Waikaka £250. Turoto £l5O, Tokirima to Wanganui river £92, Ravn £174, Kakahi £2OO, Kakahi stream bridge £261, Kopuha £IOO, Kuraurau £4Bl, Makihikatoa £SO, Mangakahikatea £154.

Mr P. Dons wrote requesting payment of balance of contract. —Resolved that payment be made when engineer passes the work.

Main Road. Resolved that the Council urge the need of metalling junction of road at Mahorahora junction.

Waikaka Loan.—lt was decided to scertain whether in the event of the Government giving a £ for £ subsidy on loan, would it be required to submit plans and specifications for the approval of the resident engineer. Workmen's Compensation.—lt was decided to insure all Council employees, a sum of £SOO to cover all workmen.

Dog Collars. —The tender of W. McNaught at 7d was accepted. Resolved that the banking account be transferred to the Union Bank of Australia, Ohura branch.
