HANGATIKI.
(Own Correspondent.) Mr Kirk, of Waitomo, has sold his grocery business and intends devoting his time to the tourist traffic. He has purchased a new first-cla;s 'bus, and is running daily to and from Hangatiki Station to the "Caves." The passenger traffic is very brisk this season. When the new accommodation house is built, Mr Kirk will have a very busy time. The Caves seem to be growing in popularity and the number of visitors this season should greatly exceed previous records. The Hangatiki settlers, aided by the generosity of outlying settlers, have purchased a fine organ for use during service in the school. On Friday just before the express stopped at Kiokio station, I noticed a hat blow from a window of the front carriage and very soon was well in the rear of the train. When the train stopped at the station the hat was visible on its back near some scrub. Presently a man jumped off the train and quickly brought the hat to the guard's van. All this occurred on the east side. On the west side of the train the owner had got off and of course, had seen none of this, and as the train moved out of the station he was seen searching for his hat with eyes almost bulging from his head. In a short time the man from the guard's van came through my carriage and I asked him if he knew where to find the owner of the hat. He said that he thought in the front carriage. I told him to look out of the window and he would see him looking for his hat. Now the question I want to ask is I this: —Suppose the gentleman who lost I his hat met the one who found it, j would he be justified in slaying?
