A committee meeting of the Kaikoura Agricultural and Pastoral Association is convened for Saturday next, at 2 p.rn., at the Band Room. A full muster is requested.

Sergt. Clive Chapman was mentioned in a casualty list last week. This is the fifth occasion on which he has been wounded. He is a son of Mr Walter Chapman, of Kaikoura. Pte. Acton Barnes, who recently returned from Italy, is expected to arrive home to-day for a short period, and will return to Christchurch Hospital, where he has been a patient for the past three months. The Annual Holidays Act, 1944, came into force on August 1. It is compulsory for employeis to keep a holiday book. These can be secured at the Star Office.

The many friends of Mr and Mrs P. M. Kerr will regret to learn of the death of their son Steve, who is reported to have been killed in action. He gave his life that we may live in freedom.

Heartfelt sympathy will go out to Mrs C. E. Lane and family in their be* reavement at the loss of Sergeant J. (“Jim,”) A. P. Lane, who died overseas as a result of wounds. This young soldier went through many battles and gave his life for his country.

A very enjoyable time was spent at the Public Works Social Hall, Beach Road on Thursday night, on the occasion of the fortnightly dance. Music was supplied by Mr W. Thom,-as (piano), Mr A. Denia (accordeon), with extras by Misses A. Harnett and P. Kennedy. Mr T. K. Robertson was M.C. A Monte Carlo was won by Miss A. Harnett and Mr Gilmore, and a lucky spot by Mrs B. Bain and Mr J.
