Mr and Mrs George Roberts have returned to Kaikoura, after spending their honeymoon in the Sounds.

In a wounded list published on Monday is the name of Trooper George Austin Smith, of Kaikoura, son of Mrs G. D. Smith, Main South Road.

To-night, at the P.W.D. Social Hall, Beach Road, a dance will be held in aid of the parcels fund for P.W.D. men overseas.

A dance is to be held in the Drill Hall on Saturday night, supervised by the Kaikoura Basketball Sub-Associa-tion, as a patriotic effort.

Mrs E. Tombs (Suburban) left for Wellington recently to meet her son, Sergt. Hector Tombs, who arrived from the Middle East, and is reported to be seriously wounded.

Mrs AV. McD. Baker presided at the monthly meeting of the Plunket Society, when Nurse Keller presented the following report: Number of new eases 4, visits to homes 83, visits to rooms, adults 20, babies 19.

On Saturday next, at 10 a.m., at the dairy factory, Messrs Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., will offer by auction on account of the Dairy Company, a 2000 gallon tank, building material, etc.

Miss Gibson, Child Welfare Officer, of Christchurch, was a visitor to Kaikoura during the week-end, and enquired into several matters associated with the welfare of children.

Mr JanijOs Boyd is in his 86th year, Mr Alex Boyd in his 84th, and Mr David Boyd in his 82nd. The three brothers are hale and hearty and carrying on with vim and vivacity. Mrs John Boyd is in her 89th year. They are among the oldest residents of Kaikoura.

At the sale of dairy cattle on Monday, conducted on account of Mr C. Hamilton, cows made up to £l2, the average price working out at £8 1/ per head. Heifers made fromj £3 10/ to £7 2/6. Heifers were not keenly sought after, except for anything of outstanding quality. The Prime Minister of Canada (Mr Mackenzie King) announced that since the beginning of the year the combined resources of escort vessels and carrierbased and land-based aircraft had sunk five times more German submarines in the Atlantic than the number of Allied merchant ships lost. “Japan’s new industries in stolen Manchukuo are no safer than Japan’s war industries and war njachine elsewhere,” said the United States War Secretary (Mr 11. L. Stimson). He was referring to the Superfortress attacks, which, he said, had been carried out by substantial forces, and had scored direct hits on coke ovens and other factory buildings.
