FIRE.
FOUR-ROOMED COTTAGE GUTTED.
A fire occurred on the Esplanade about 11 o’clock last night, when an almost new four-roomed cottage owned by Airs A. W. Rutherford, of Mendip Hill, was badly gutted and the contents of the building destroyed. The fire apparently started above the ceiling in one of the back rooms and spread across the building above the kitchen and drawing room, most of the damage being done by falling debris. The furniture was considerably aged. The outside walls of the house did not receive a great deal of damage. On the alarnT being given the Volunteer Fire Brigadesmen were quickly on the scene and made an exceedingly good safe. The cause of the fire is not ascertainable, the house having been unoccupied since Wednesday last, when Airs Rutherford went to Christchurch. The building was insured in the National Office,
