GIRL’S JOURNEY ON HORSEBACK.
A journey on horseback from Cromwell, in Central Otago to Collingwood (Nelson), a distance of some 540 mjles, was recently undertaken by Miss M. Coutts , of Palmerston, Otago. She travelled the route over the Haast Pass to the West Coast, up the coast to Greymouth, then inland via Ikamatua, Inangahua Junction, Murchison, Glenhope, Tui, down to Motueka Valley, and over the Takaka Hill. The journey took 26 days of travelling, with some breaks en route, an average of more than 20 miles a day. Although Miss Coutts had previously made journeys from her home in and other parts of Otago, this was the longest trip she had undertaken on horseback. She is now living in Collingwood, where she has taken a position.
