140,000 JAPANESE REMAINING IN PACIFIC.
CANBERA, July 26.
A total of 140,000 Japanese remain in the South*west and South Pacific areas, according to an official estimate by the Commonwealth Departrqent of Information, based on details supplied by the armed forces. The enemy forces aie distributed in isolated groups with little hope of escape. There are 60,000 in New Guinea, 50,000 in New Britain, 20,000 on Bougainville, and 10,000 in New Ireland.
The Department expresses the opinion that the offensive begun a year ago had secured to the Allies an arc of bases from which to launch the next great phase of the operations aimed at the reconquest of the Philippine." Netherlands East Indies, and the nation of the China Sea.
