The Kaikoura Star And COUNTY GAZETTE and RECORDER THURSDAY, JULY 27, 1944. 1944 PATRIOTIC APPEAL.

Unity is strength, and in no cause is unity so nijuch desired as in the appeal for funds to supply the men fighting overseas with comforts to make their lot as cheerful as possible. We owe it to the fighting men in the field to do our part on the home front, and w.e can certainly make the life of the soldiers happier by sending parcels to them and providing them with other amenities — they deserve all that we can do for them*. Many can help one, but one cannot help many, hence all of *us should band together to secure Kaikoura’s quota for the 1944 appeal for funds for the men who are battling for freedom on our behalf. In Kaikoura we cannot faithfully say we are not enjoying a high standard of comfort, but that standard, we should remember, is due to the fact that the soldiers are fighting so valiantly on land, sea and in the air, making sacrifices and living •under conditions that few would care to undergo. Therefore we should show our appreciation by giving of our best. By unity we can accomplish much, and all should make a point of being present at the public meeting to be held in the Drill Hall on Tuesday night next to consider ways and means of obtaining Kaikoura’s quota. The members of the A. and P. Association on Saturday decided to hold a gymkhana as their effort; the Kaikoura Trotting Club was to have held a patriotic race meeting for the same purpose, but unfortunately could not secure the necessary permit to do so, but doubtless the Club will co-operate with the A. and I’.

Association at its gymkhana. Here, then, is a good start, now it is for those who attend the meeting on Tuesday night to further the cause. Those attending may have new ideas and suggestions to bring forth—they may be small, they may be large, but every little helps. It is hoped there will be a large and enthusiastic assemblage in response to the County Chairman’s appeal. Will you do your part?
