KAIKOURA V. CLARENCE. Kaikoura met a team from Clarence on Saturday afternoon at Takahanga. Domain, and was victorious bby 33 points to nil. When the teams took up positions it looked as if the Clareime players were about equal to the Kffikoura men, but about ten minutes after play started A. Smith, from a penalty, scored for Kaikoura. After resuming Tony Miles put in a good run and gained territory. Kaikoura kept up a hot attack, and McPhee eventually scored behind Uhe posts. A Smith took the kick but did not succeed in securing the major points—Kaikoura 6, Clarence 0. Play was now in Kaikoura territory, then rushed to the other end, where A. Smith got aver, but J. Sntith failed with tihe kick, —Kaikoura 9, Clarence 0. Kaikoura still pressed on and J. Smith was next to cross the line, the kick at goal again failing—Kaikoura 12, Clarence 0. At this stage T. Dunn, who had been playing a good game for Clarence, injured his knee and had to be carried off the field. Clarence was later forced, but just afterwards J. Smith got over but his kick failed Kaikoura 15, Clarence nil. A free kick to Clarence brought play to Kaikoura brought play to Kaikoura 25, but a free kick was awarded to Kaikoura. Play transferred from Kaikoura to Clarence end, where A. Smith secured another try, but the kick at goal was unsuccessful—Kaikoura 18, Clarence nil* In the second half a hot pace was set, and some good passing was performed by Kaikoura backs without gaining much territory, and later the visitors were forced. Clarence was awarded a free kick, but C. Watene failed with his kick, at goaL There was another bout of passing by Kaikoura, R. Miles passed to iMcßae, who crossed the line, but his kick went short — Kaikoura 21, Clarehce nil. Subsequently T. Miles got possession and scored from a handy position, Mcßae missing with the kick —Kaikoura 24.. Clarence nil. T. Miles again secured, passed to McRae, who streaked along the linAk speedy style, but was called back. Another casualty* on the Clarence side and E. McFail had to go off with an injured ankle. A free kick to Kaikoura about 15 yards out but A. Smith failed with the kick at goal. Kaikoura kept up a hot attack, and McPhee crossed the line, but the kick, was not taken— Kai koura 27, Clarencd nil. Kaikoura shortly after was forced. Play went to the other end a free kick for Kaikoura failing. From the scrum McPhee got possession and secured a try, the kick not being taken-*—Kaikoura 30, Clarence 0. A Smith secured the final try, following an intercepted pass by Miles, but again the kick was not taken, and and the end came with the score Kaikoura 33, Clarence nil. Sutton, Todhunter and Dunn played well for Clarence, and all the Kaikoura players were at top. Mr R. Jenkins Controlled the game.
