GERMAN WIRE ROPE

AUCKLAND HARBOUR BOARD’S DECISION AUCKLAND, November 24. A tender for the supply of wire ropes made in Germany was accepted by the Auckland Harbour Board, although the proposal met with strong opposition from several members who claimed that the board should purchase British goods, and who also criticised the working conditions in Germany. The report of the purchasing and stores committee said that the tenders had been referred to the board’s engineer. Ho had reported that the tendew for ropes made in Germany was 21.1 per cent, lower than the tender lor Australian-made ropes, and 24.7 per cent, below the lowest tender for ropes made in Great Britain. Ropes mjole by a German firm and supplied under the last two contracts had given excellent results. Thus it was recommended that, the tender for Germanmade ropes be accepted, and the committee rcommended that the engineer’s report be approved.
