BUTTER IN LONDON WHY MARKET IS FIRM Latest cabled reports of the, London butter market show that it remains firn: for New Zealand at about 110/per cwt. as last week. On November 4 it was round about 104/- and reached .112/- for finest and 111/- for first grade six days later. The cause for the general strength of the market is considered by those in the trade to be reduced Australian production. Reports received by mail confirm this view. Tn brief, slight rains had fallen in th© Queensland dairy district where unusually dry conditions had prevailed. Victoria was enjoying favourable weather and was supplying New South Wales where rain was badly needed in dairying areas. South Australia reports a declining production. Western Australia had excellent rains. Tasmania had a few showers and production was increasing in that State. An earlier report than the above, which was dated November 17, went to show that conditions were exceedingly dry in Queensland with bare pastures and stock being fed with wheat. Water was very short. Australia is limiting exports to 1500 tons a week in order to retain sufficient for domestic requirements. Production in New Zealand is well sustained and shows an increase, so far, of 10 per cent, on that of last season. The New Zealand Primary Products Department reports that shipments of buttei from Australia to the United Kingdom this season to October 31 were 15,557 tons against 17,952 tons for the corresponding period of last season.
