TRANSPORT CHARGES DIFFERENTIAL RATE ON PETROL.

The Chairman referred to the transport question ami the arrangement of a schedule of charges entered into at the recent conference. Whilst the rate for general goods had been increased from 30/- to 40/- per ton, the rate on petrol had gone up by lld per gallon, or from 35/- to 55/- per ton. He understood the price of petrol had not risen in Christchurch. When the schedule was under discussion he had referred to the question of the transport of petrol, ami Mr Langford, of the Railwa,y Department, had told those present that as the petrol companies were going to transport their own petrol it was not necessary to include it in the schedule. He urged that the authorities be written to asking why the rate for the carriage of petrol had been increased, after being advised that it was not necessary to bring petrol charges into the schedule. He felt that an explanation was certainly necessary seeing that they were advised that it was unnecessary to discuss the petrol charges at the conference. “It had come like a bolt from the blue,” concluded the Chairman. Mr P. S. Humm (Dairy Company delegate to tho conference) endorsed the remarks of the chairman, emphasising that the matter was an important one to the settlers of the district, and the question should be gone into fully. It was decided to communicate with the Licensing Authority icgarding the matter.
