THE PRICE OF BREAD.

In an endeavour to stabilise prices and conditions in the baking industry, and to put an end to a ‘‘ruinous’’ price war which is going on in some parts of the country, the New Zealand Master Bakers' and Pastrycook's Association is making arrangements for a general petition to Parliament during the coming session. On Friday the Christchurch branch of the association met several Canterbury members of Parliament to explain the petition to them and to gain their sympathy. Messrs H. S. S. Kyle, -J. Connohy, and R. W. Hawke attended the meeting and other local members, who were out of town, sent their apologies. Mr C. E. Boon presided and Mr C. Ccwan, president of the New Zealand pssjciation, was also present. The bakers, it is understood, are not necessarily seeking to raise the price, of bread, but they consider that they are faced with severe hardships in some centres where price-cutting has been practised. Thus they are aiming at more stabilised conditions. It was explained to the members of Parliament that, considering the lean rimes, the Chirstchurch bakers were m.-re or less satisfied with their position, but that they would support any attempt to secure some measure of Dominion-wide stabilisation. They would welcome an investigation of the trade by the Department of Industries and Commerce.
