THE SEAMEN’S STRIKE.

Australian trade unionists are preparing for a conference at which they will determine jthc-ir attitude towards the deportation law. The Federal Treasurer condemns the action of the Premier of New South Wales in questioning the validity of the deportation law, and suggests that Mr Lang is taking orders from Tom Walsh. MELBOURNE, September 8. The key industries unions’ conference instructed its delegates to the Sydney conference that the Waterside and Transport Unions are prepared to take any action necessary to prevent deportations, but did not desire to be stampeded into a general stoppage until all constitutional methods had been exhausted; that the political and industrial wings would use all methods to force an early Federal election; that in the event of the Government refusing to dissolve Parliament while still deporting union officials, a further conference will be held with the understanding that the seamen, waterside workers and power and light unions’ representatives were prepared to recommend cither a partial or general strike or take any action deemed judicious to fight deportations. Mr Stanley Bruce addressed a rowdy meeting at Wonthaggi, where he spoke on the subject of deportation until he was howled down by the crowd. 1 n answer to a question, he said that he had no intention of going, to the country on this particular question, b'v ause he believed he had an overwhelming majority of the people behind him. At the conclusion a vote of no-con-fidence in Mr Bruce, as member, was carried. Mr Matthew Carlton, leader of the Labour Party, challenged the Prime Minister to appeal to the electors for their judgment before putting the deportation legislation into operation.
