SPANIARDS OUTWITTED.
LONDON, September 7. The Madrid correspondent of the “Daily News” reports that FrancoSpanish warships and aeroplanes took part in a terrific night-long bombardment, and at dawn a large force of Spaniards attempted to land at Alhucemas. Two thousand from the waiting transports rowed ashore, but were met by a devastating machine-gun fire from the Riffs concealed in trenches. Simultaneously the Riffs” heavy guns returned the battleships’ covering fire, while 75’s raked the beaches. In the face of a death-dealing fusiladc, the Spaniards retired hastily in the boats. General de Rivera was aboard the Alfonso XIII., when a shell struck her, destroying the wireless. Abdel Krim is employing fearless Jebella tribesmen successfully. Advices from Tangier stpte that the astute Abdel Krim has again outwitted his European enemies by launching surprise and determined, attacks on two fronts. Apparently Abdel Krim has forced the Franco-Spanish allies to accept the one thing they are most anxious to avoid, namely, the maintenance of large armies in Morocco throughout the winter, and the necessity of a new campaign in 1926.
