ROADS AND ROADMEN.
At Friday’s meeting of the Council, attention was drawn to the fact that a foreman was employed at 15/ a day, ami was only engaged in spreading metal. It was decided to do without .the foreman. A discussion then ensued, and it was decided to give a month’s notice to all surfacemen, and that fresh applications he invited from men willing to supply two draught horses and tip drays. It was advocated that the men should he supplied with suitable implements for doing the work on the roads. Good strong teams were also required. If the roads were put in order the surfacemen could attend to them, the grader should be used more—the roads were lower in the centre than on the sides. It was not considered wise to put on a man with two heavy horses, the horses would be idle most of the time.! Teams were advocated, so that work and men could be concentrated ami shifted to different localities. A gang of men would be better than one man here ami there. It was suggested that the Council invite tenders for teams to go anywhere required, as at present money was going out from the Council, and the Council was not getting results. Put on a gang and a good foreman in charge. A team should also be secured for working the grader. The Waiau Road needed two good horses, a tip dray and implements. The question is, Will the Council’s finances stand a two-horse team ad dray for each riding? It was resolved that a four-horse team be called for the use of the grader ami other purposes. A man with two horses and a dray were needed between Aniseed and Waipapa, and another between Aniseed ami Hapuku, but a motion to this effect was j not. supported. It was agreed to have a two-horso team on the North Road. The above was the tenor of the dis cussion on the loading problem.
