THE WHARF.
The want of shipping facilities was raised at the Council meeting on Friday. Cr Pannell remarked on the fact that the wharf had no earning power at the present time, and suggested that th" Council should communicate wi.h ihipping agents with a view to securing a suitable vessel for trading between Lyttelton, Kaikoura and Wellington. At present the roads were being cut up by lorry traffic, when the wharf should be used. The earning power of the wharf must be increased, even if a reduction of wharfage was necessary. Cr Smith said the remarks of Cr Pan noli were on the right linos, and ho supported something being done. Cr Shand said if the port were made a safer one boats would bo attracted to Kaikoura. If they solved this difficulty everything would go on all right. It was the insurance difficulty that was keeping the boats away. Cr D. Boyd said they wore in the position that they could not get a bag of sugar in the town. Ho thought the Council should take some action regarding this important matter. Cr. Pannell’s suggestion was agreed to.
