Mr R. P. Hudson, ex-member for Motueka, is leaving the Dominion shortly, and on the 18th inst he is disposing of his furniture and effects by public auction. Mr Hugh Scott, well-known in Reefton, together with Miss Ena Washbourn, are holding an exhibition of their work at the Suter Art Gallery, Nelson, this week. During a Cabinet meeting on Friday, the Hon E. A. Ransom, Minister of Public Works, was suddenly taken ill, being attacked by a fainting fit and collapsed. He is now reported to be showing much improvement. A sharp earthquake shock was felt in Reefton at 11 20 a.m. on Sunday. Beyond startling some of the more timid, no damage was done. The quake, which was accompanied by a loud ncise as though of thunder, was severe at Westport, when the shelves of stores and hotels suffered severely. On Saturday afternoon a gathering ot nearly 100 people attended a demonstration by the Cawtbron Institute on an experimental pakibi plot at Fairdown, when the work done was explained by Professor Easterfield and Mr Rigg. There what formerly was pakibi land is carrying a good growth of mixed grasses and flax, and the results are regarded as very promising. In reply to a query as to whether a carrier is allowed to take friends out for a picnic on Sunday without making any charge, we may state that the natter is likely to be tested in the 'ourts early in January. The position is not clear. Passengers carried by a licensed carrier, whether they pay a fare or not, are presumed to be covered : by compulsory insurance, and the number of passengers to be permitted varies according to the license fee.
