Widespread devastation was caused by Tuesday night's storm at Northam and the York districts. Following four days intense heat, the rain was accompanied by '. large hailstones and a cyclonic wind. After a lull, another even worse storm occurred and 7 inches of rain fell in 35 iftinutes. An arm ..QjQhe. Avon river overflowed the wall, and the wave of water, 200 yards wide and 5 leet deep carrying everything moveable before it rushed down oh the town and flooded Main Street. People took refuge in chairs and boxes placed on taJbies. There were many narrow escapes, while to make matters wofse the electric station was flooded and the town was left in darkness. The waters subsided at the end of three hours but the damage done is estimated at from Llo.ooo to L 15,000.
