When she appeared before Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M., in the Te Aroha Children’s Court on a charge of stealing a. diamond ring valued at £lOO from her employer, a young Maori domestic was given 12 months’ probation on a special condition. She was also convicted and discharged for a breach of a current probation order. For the police, Sergeant A. Doei stated that on October 27 he had been approached by complainant who told him that she had gone to Auckland for the day and on arriving home that night, she had discovered the ring to be missing from her room. Part of defendant’s duties had been the cleaning of complainant’s room. Defendant had been accosted and later surrendered the ring. Defendant pleaded guilty and had nothing to say for herself. She could give no reason why she should not be dealt with on the original charge, relating to the theft of some articles of ,a total value of £l6/16/111 at Auckland on March 2, 1950, on which she had 'been admitted to probation. An undertaking was given by the guardian of the girl that she would be taken back to live with her and that she would be under strict supervision.
